Elevate Tutoring is looking for an organized, energetic self-starter to serve as a full-time Executive Director for our growing nonprofit organization. If you are an experienced Program Director, Development Director, or Executive Director, we are excited to hear from you! 


Organizational Background

Since 2011, Elevate Tutoring has advanced social mobility for young people throughout the Bay Area. First and foremost, Elevate is a college success organization. Each year, we support low-income, first-generation college students (our fellows) in persevering through college and into a successful career. This support includes training, work experience, and a $7,500 scholarship to cover educational expenses. However, Elevate’s distinctive feature is that each of our fellows pays-it-forward by providing 4-5 hours a week of free STEM tutoring to underserved K-12 students in need. Across nearly 20 middle and high schools in the South Bay and East Bay, our tutoring program helps change the paradigm of achievement for K-12 students. Over the past 12 years we’ve supported nearly 250 college students, who have earned more than $1,000,000 in scholarships, and provided more than 23,000 hours of free STEM tutoring.

This Role

Elevate Tutoring is at an exciting inflection point of growth, having nearly tripled in size since 2020. Today, we have a team of four staff that supports more than 75 active tutor fellows in our program with an organizational budget of approximately $1M.


As Executive Director, you will be responsible for the continued success of our programs, fundraising, operations, and strategy. As a small team, this will require you to lead and manage our staff, engage with our Board of Directors, and get your hands dirty solving problems on your own. The ideal candidate will bring a relentless drive to get things done, and a proven track record of success in the past. 


Job Duties and Responsibilities 



  • Manage our Director of Programs to ensure that all aspects of our programs, including fellow recruitment, onboarding, training, scheduling, evaluation, and case management proceed smoothly. 

  • Support the programs team with capacity building initiatives (developing systems, dashboards, processes, etc.) that improve overall program operations.

  • Develop and cultivate relationships with school and college partners to ensure a robust pipeline of college student applicants, and STEM tutoring opportunities.



  • Manage and support our Director of Development in developing an overall fundraising strategy and annual development plan, including strategy to strengthen donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, diversify funding streams, and improve results.

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with funders and major donors to achieve an overall revenue goal of at least $1M annually.

  • Represent Elevate at public events, stakeholder meetings, building thought leadership, brand awareness, and community connections.

  • Oversee and guide the organization’s brand and marketing strategy; support implementation as appropriate.



  • Manage staff payroll and benefits, including biweekly payroll, health benefits, and expense reimbursement.  

  • Develop and maintain our financial practices including annual budgeting, quarterly financial statements. Work with pro-bono or contracted accountants to maintain accurate, up-to-date financial information. 

  • Prepare annual tax filings, and ensure compliance with all nonprofit requirements. 

  • Lead all HR practices including hiring, performance management, team building, and professional development. 



  • Together with the Board and staff, determine how to implement the organization's growth plan and vision, and contribute your own ideas.

  • Partner with the Board to shape strategic direction and expand fundraising

  • Grow the organization and scale impact through improving staffing structures, fundraising systems, marketing plans, and evaluation systems to support steady growth

Additional responsibilities

  • Attend occasional evening and weekend events, in-person and virtual.



  • Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of director-level experience at a nonprofit, or similar, organization. 

  • 1+ years of direct people management experience.

  • Proven track record of fundraising, sales, or building partnerships. 

  • Organized and able to maintain focus on long-term projects with urgent interruptions or fluctuating priorities throughout the day. 

  • Availability to maintain consistent office hours during business hours with flexibility to support occasional evening and weekend meetings or events. 

  • Confidence working remotely, with access to a suitable personal work space. Elevate does not maintain a physical office space, but this role requires weekly site visits, meetings, and events within the San Jose and East Bay metro areas. Must have availability and access to reliable transportation. 



Salary is commensurate with experience, ranging from $95,000 to $120,000 per year. Paid leave includes 3 weeks of personal leave (sick, vacation) and 10 paid holidays per year. This position comes with health insurance or a personal benefit bonus to offset costs of healthcare, retirement, etc.
